Default K&K Pickups in Carbon Fiber guitars?

I'm thinking about a CF guitar for my outdoor gigs but I'm not a fan of the piezo pickups that most (if not all) of them seem to come equipped with. Has anyone tried a K&K in a CF guitar. I'd love to hear your results with any other alternative pickups to piezos in CF guitars as well.

K&K has been used successfully, I have used the Lyric and it works very well I think.

K&K Mini in my 2011 H-WS1100N2. Installed it myself, play through a Baggs Para Acoustic DI and I'm very happy it.

I have K&K mini's in both my RainSong H-DR1100N2 and pre-Peavey CA-OX Raw, and Martin D-35. Very pleased with the sound .. love having no batteries to deal with. Play both through a Para DI and "raw" into the mixer or Bose L1 Compact.

Hey Kramster,

What preamp are you using with your mini loaded CF's?

Thanks,
Dave

I had a K&K installed in my AGF shorty.

I've had a few issues. First time I tried playing out with it the sound was very "boomy". To the point where I said "screw it, find me an SM57."

Tried it again a couple weeks ago with a sound guy who knew what he was doing. Once we ran the output through a DI box it sounded pretty good, though perhaps slightly bright.

This is the benefit and bane of a passive pickup. No batteries to change, and fairly natural sound, but be prepared to require some additional interfaces, and possibly even an external preamp before you can plug and play. (IMHO needing an external preamp negates the whole reason to go passive in the first place)

Mostly just straight into my Unico or T1 and Bose Compact.

Thanks for the info. I am going to try it through my Axe FX II and use the tube pre sim.

Most of the K&K users I've read about have stated that your results are likely to be much better with an external preamp.

Yes, which is why I asked Kramster what he was using. I tried my K&K equipped Shorty with my Axe FX II using the tube preamp sim and out to a Mesa Boogie Bass cab, which has more of a flat frequency response and it actually sounded pretty good. More tweaking to be done, but I am not performing any time soon, so it's really a matter of playing around at this point.

K&K usually work pretty nicely on carbon fiber guitars, but it varies. each model and company give different results. for example, for CA, the Cargo usually is too mid-bass heavy, while the OX sounds great

i've tried a bunch of emeralds with K&K and i'm more than pleased with the sound (specially an acoustic bass... WOW!). i haven't tried any blackbirds with K&K pickups yet.
