Lyle Mays has passed away...
sad news.
His playing complemented Metheny so well. The first few recordings were on heavy rotation in the 70's and 80's for me. Another gone too young. https://www.patmetheny.com/news/full_display.cfm?id=137

Thanks for sharing. The first Pat Metheny Group album is still in my iPhone rotation. I got it for the guitar, and still listen to it because of the piano.

This one came as a shock for me. I guess he had been ill for a while, but he was a very private person overall. Rest well, Lyle, thanks for all of the wonderful music.

Wow, he was 66?!? I still picture him as a young man. His playing with Pat Metheny on San Lorenzo still moves me after...gosh, has it been 40 years? RIP

This is terrible news!! I was a big PMG fan. I'll have to blow the dust off some of their albums this evening.
RIP Lyle. |

R.I.P., Lyle.
The first time I saw him was with Joni Mitchell in 1979, then I got to meet him in the early '80s at the old Agora in Columbus. He was very excited about talking about his recent acquisition of the Synclavier he used on that tour. Time to go revisit all that great old PM/LM music.

Thanks, Lyle, for all the wonderful music you gave to the world! Whether with Pat or on your solo work, your playing is always an inspiration and a joy to hear/feel!
May your spirit go on to make the music of the stars and heavens...

Sorry - couldn't get it to embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCL2SOn42aE&t=414s And, to this day probably my favorite tune of theirs.... https://vimeo.com/302318447

I'm in tears...
No other jazz pianist has touched me so deeply, so many times. Ironic, then, that he really wasn't so interested in being a jazz pianist. In his last published interview, last year, he said that jazz doesn't interest him much, as it usually lacks the dynamics and progression of classical music. And so, after two decades of filling stadiums around the world with Pat Metheny, Lyle retired from music to work in architecture and software. Pat's worked with other pianists since, but none who brought such majestic intent to the music.
There is one posthumous please that Lyle's fan should know of. Release last year, The Ludwingsburg Concert documents a live European date by Lyle's quartet. Available wherever rare albums are sold, (ok, Amazon), it's a great two-disc recording of a genius in his prime. I can picture him onstage in that ubiquitious white shirt, with cuffs unbuttoned, looking like a classical virtuoso turned mad scientist. At Lyle's same age, I'm aware that I'm well into life's second set, but that's OK. I was born in time to see the Beatles play live, and in time to hear Lyle and Pat together.

Oh wow....what a surprise, and a reminder of my own mortality as well. I went to college with Lyle. My freshman year I was a music major, as was he. He already was blowing everyone away with his talent. I can remember him "holding court" and the rest of us just watching with our mouths hanging open. I switched majors my sophomore year but continued to check his career out from time to time as he progressed. A lot of talent there. Sorry to hear of his passing.
