Budget semi-hollow body opinions?
Like the title says, I'm looking for some thoughts on a semi-hollow body on a budget of $1k or less. Slim profile neck is a plus, along with dual humbuckers and no vibrato tailpiece. My amp will be a Tweed Deluxe once the rest of my kit gets here this week and I get it built. My pedal board is also pretty minimalist; basically a couple of overdrive pedals that get used occasionally. Style of music is mostly blues/blues rock. Thanks in advance!

I picked up a used Epi ES339 Pro over the weekend... Sweet little player. $300 used w/HSC via CL... $400 new, no case. Think of it as a petite 335. Soft C neck, easy to handle (about the size of an LP), light weight. Goes from warm and dark to bright and twangy thanks to the split coils (Alnico Pros, which are pretty hot).

Anything by Ibanez. I've seen quite a few, and none have been duds. They have slim neck profiles. I have this urge to get their ES330 knockoff:
http://www.ibanez.co.jp/products/hb_...=23&color=CL01 I played one least year and liked it a lot, good P90 tone and some "acousticness" in the sound.

I've heard good things about the Hagstrom Viking and that should be a bit under your budget. I myself have a 335 copy by Xavier and that was around $300 with hard case. I had a setup and fret level and it plays like a dream. You can get a lot of guitar for your budget.

I love my Epiphone Casino, direct descendent of the 330, hollow body, thin neck.

+1 for the Casino - and since I'm in a Beatles frame of mind this week, I'd also recommend a look at one of the Gretsch Electromatic 5400/5600-Series full-size models; should make for a great rockabilly/Brit-Invasion rig with that tweed Deluxe clone...

I'd prefer a Sheraton or dot from Epiphone, or maybe even a Lucille. The Casino body type has less sustain and so won't "sing" quite so well.
I'm not sure if I'd want to keep the stock pickups - mind you there are very few guitars I would, even expensive ones. I started winding my own not so long ago so I've got a bit spoiled on the pickup front. If you're up for amp-building give that a shot too. I think the deluxe will really sing with something bright and dynamic to bring out the best in these very responsive, dynamic little amps - vintage PAFs for a vintage amp. Uncovered, unpotted and mismatched coils will probably help. Epiphone aren't a high-end brand but match them up with a tweed amp and good pickups and they can produce some very satisfying noises |

Really liking the feedback so far. That PRS is a beauty, and I'm a sucker for figured woods like that. The Dot and similar Epiphones are probably pretty close to what I have in mind, but I need to feel and play them to see what they offer. And to Moon, I think you're right on pickups - I run Duncan JB and Jazz pups in my Les Paul and they are excellent with the old tweed circuits. I know someone who makes very good replicas of the original Gibson PAF's... Hmm, I think I have a project idea brewing now.

When I think of semi-hollow guitar brands, I usually think of Epiphone/Gibson or Ibanez. But what surprised me was a friend's Washburn HB-30 (335 copy). Really a decent guitar, but it had a weak bridge pickup. I bought it, and replaced the bridge pickup.

Under $1000? Gretch Electromatic. There are a few differeent models from $700 to $1000. Lower price: Eiphone Casino or Sheraton.
Real 'budget' Epiphone Dot. Note that for the Epi's, you need to play a few to find one that's 'just right'.
