Do a search for guitar road trip if you want some feedback.

After I had described, possibly with sound examples what I was after I'd take the makers as to the 'combination / options. He makes the instrument - I make the music.

That's a great idea. If you have a completed guitar, you can send it out on the road. I think each user pays to get it to the next user. I don't recall the specifics. This way you can get feedback on your work.

All that said, I think the market for luthier built guitars is going the other way, to more and more exotic woods. |

I am getting increasing interest in all-Koa, and the smart money there is on the less fancy cuts as they perform better. My work in this direction is coming out well enough that there is some question whether spruce/hardwood was the best choice for our icon guitar. Disclaimer: I do not actually own an all-Koa personally, but I am thinking about it seriously.

By the way, is there another wood similar in tone to African Blackwood, but without the weight? I've heard that it makes for a very heavy guitar, especially in the larger body sizes.

ABW is seriously heavy. I have a parlour guitar in it that still takes me by surprise every time I pick it up.

That comes with a different kind of weight...measured in dollars!

They (EIR, Mahogany & Sitka) have been used, for the last 40+ years, because those particular woods have been more readily available in quantities large enough to support factory production requirements. Most of the other exotic woods are not.
