+1, Barry. I used to like some bling but less so now.

...wow....I am surprised to hear so many say the the name on the headstock is the most over rated.....the name on the headstock often tells me a lot about how the guitar is made...and what to expect....

...beyond that...it is not a reflection of the owner of the guitar as much as it is the makers brand....signing ones name to a product should not be dismissed as inconsequential or over rated...

...as to what I think is most over rated...nothing...from the name on the headstock to the endpin I think it all counts...

The guitar, as a whole.

If I hand my guitar to someone else to play, my guitar sounds like him or her playing. If he or she hands it to someone else to play, it sounds like that person playing.

My point is that the critical factor in how a guitar sounds is the person playing it. Sure, some guitars have more potential, more ability than others, but if - chose your favourite player - picked up your guitar, it would still sound like that player. I could pick up Segovia's guitar and play it, but I won't sound like Segovia.

Way too much is made of this or that guitar, this or that manufacturer, this or that wood... It's mostly about the player, not the gear.

[QUOTE=botofogo;6335571 My close buddy spends $40k on a car and then puts his feet (with shoes on) up on the dashboard where it scuffs. [/QUOTE]

YIKES!! I would never do that!

I HATE scuffs on my shoes.

Some have said the back and sides. Being a woodworker I look at how well the back is book matched and how well the ribbing is done.

A job well done there can give clues to how much attention was paid to rest of it when being built.

Default Nut MATERIAL

Nut material. I emphasis “material” because it is IMO important to have the nut “cut/grooved” properly. I’ve had excellent sounding guitars with plastic, bone, tusq, and ebony nuts. While I’ve heard significant improvement/changes from different saddle materials, not nearly so much with nut material. Just an opinion.

I also go with Bling. I love the sound of my D-15 mahogany, and it is one of the plainest looking guitars ever. There is beauty in simplicity.
