Static
The volume knob on my Ovation has a lot of static. Would like thoughts on what would cause it. A friend told me that the pick ups on these old Ovations are real good and replacing it with a new one may not be the best thing. Any help would be appreciated.

It's not the pickup, it's most likely either the jack that the cable plugs in or the volume knob or other control in the preamp is just dirty. Get a can of DeOxit from Amazon and, with the battery removed, spray in the moving parts and then move them back and forth a lot. Perhaps a can of air to blow the left over stuff out and then put the battery back in. What you have to spray depends on what preamp you have. They go from a simple volume control up to ones with a good selection of knobs and sliders. The output jack may need to be un bolted to get at and cleaned.
What model Ovation do you have ? What version of the preamp ?

not sure what you mean by static, but, first try spinning the knob back and forth 20 or so times. if that doesn't work, then a shot of deoxit into the pot may help. i think you mean scratchy sounding. if it is static, maybe hum, then it could be coming from the pickup and may be a loose connection.
play music!

Yes, scratchy is a better description. The guitar is a 1972 1621-4 will all original parts as far as I know. Thank you for the info.

That vintage a guitar probably has pots
you can spray with deoxit. |

DeOxit Faderlube might be a better choice given the age of the instrument and likely impossibility of replacing that POT if you destroy it or replacing the entire preamp if it is long out of production.
