Where do these "national" days come from? Most of my life, there have only been the standard days such as 4th of July, Valentines Day, President's Day, Veteran's Day, and a few others including the holiday season from Halloween through New Year's Day. All of these have real provenance, whose history that can be found rather easily.

Then, probably 15 years or so ago, these "national" days started showing up. It's national hamburger day, go out and buy a hamburger. It's national tools day, go out and buy a box of tools.

Are these things marketing ploys or do they have real meaning of some kind, and if so, who is creating them?

Not all of them. As I understand it Valentine's Day was created specifically by the Hallmark Greeting Card Company a hundred years ago (brilliant business move). It was so successful, they eventually pushed for more such days.

An excellent means of guilting guys into spending money they would otherwise spend on guitars.

I like the idea of national guitar day though.

"National Days" can only really be assigned by Congress. They went hog wild in the 1980s but have since cut back a whole bunch. To "make up" the slack there are a few private companies that now will announce these and which are picked up by media outlets. Most commonly used are https://nationaldaycalendar.com/ and apparently https://nationaltoday.com/national-day-calendar/. It seems like this is one of them as I see it on some sites but not others and can't find any Congressional resolution to support it. AFAIC it's National Guitar Day EVERY day!

Not really. Basic idea has been around for centuries:

The modern cliché Valentine's Day poem can be found in the collection of English nursery rhymes Gammer Gurton's Garland (1784):

"The rose is red, the violet's blue,
The honey's sweet, and so are you.
Thou art my love and I am thine;
I drew thee to my Valentine:
The lot was cast and then I drew,
And Fortune said it shou'd be you."

says Wikipedia (and there's earlier references too (Shakespeare, etc.)

and the cards go back long before Hallmark

Does that mean we get a pass if we buy a guitar today ?
I would think buying a guitar today would be mandatory.

"National guitar Day". Not National buy a guitar Day. Not even National play a guitar Day. Still, if you want one, go get it!

Actually, when I think about it, on National Pizza Day the local places give discounted/free slices. On National Bagel Day it's free bagels. Now if we could only get the guitar shops to do that on NGD!

Well, i suppose that would be alright as long as it doesn’t cut into my having a hotdog on National Chili Day or chili with my National Hotdog Day. Can I still have a beer with all three days?

Of course you can! I'm Canadian. Every day is National Beer Day.

I like your thinking. It’s close to Valentines Day too, and gift giving is one of the five love languages so really your significant other should buy the guitar for you and kill two birds with one stone.
