I have visited Fiddlers Green and Austin Guitar House during my trips to Austin. Very different shops with different focus.

Austin Guitar store
Fiddlers Green doesn’t keep a lot of stock, mostly used guitars. May have quality vintage, but you can usually check the website first and confirm. Cool store though and the only local Blue Chip dealer I’m aware of. Lot of focus on other string instruments and pretty small in general.

Austin Vintage Guitar and Fiddler's Green are my favorites in town.
Guitar House, Guitar Rez, and South Austin Music are also pretty decent. Strait Music is a good local alternative, more akin to Guitar Center (but not as GC-ey). |

I would say it depends on what you are looking for.
Austin Vintage Guitars is what you would expect from the name. They have a huge number of used guitars. They are a Collings dealer and have a few Collings, some new Martins but a huge number of used Martins and Gibsons and a few other misc. used brands. Also, a huge number of electrics. I would also say the most interesting store by a large margin. Most of the guitars are pretty available. Last time I was in, the Collings were now behind a counter with the higher end vintage stuff. I have not been in Fiddler's Green for a long time, it is a cool store but only a few acoustic guitars. I think they are a Collings dealer too, but maybe only mandolins? Strait Music (I have been at the larger store (south) never north). They are mostly Taylor and Martin acoustics, a large selection of both. Like GC in that respect I guess, but they are really nice folks who know what they are talking about. I run into Eric Johnson in there quite frequently. I have not been in South Austin Music for a really long time. Seemed like a pretty limited guitar selection. Guitar Resurrection is a strange one. They have Lowden and Santa Cruz and a couple of Ryans. Not sure what else, but they are basically all behind counters and you can't usually just walk in and start taking SC or Lowdens off the wall to play. Someone has to wait on you. Austin Vintage Guitar definitely the best.
Guitar Resurrection have some good ones too, often stored in a back room and only mentioned in conversation if you get that far. This can be a challenge. (I spend a lot of time in Austin)

Totally depends on what you're looking for. If I was only going to go to one shop for fun, it would be Austin Vintage Guitars. If I was actually shopping for an acoustic I would go there, Strait Music (south), Guitar Resurrection, and South Austin Music. If I don't find what I'm looking for at one of those four shops, I probably won't find it in Austin. Honorable mention to Fiddler's Green, which is a really cool shop with a pretty decent selection of used guitars. BTW - the only NEW acoustics at Austin Vintage are Martins, Collings, and Waterloo, and Recording King, most of what they have is used.

Hill Country Guitars carries high end acoustics and has been recommended by friends. Haven't actually been to Hill Country myself but check out their inventory online. Interesting... |
