Just to note that the correct name of the melody is "Slane". It is an ancient Irish air.
The well known Irish folk song "The Banks of the Bann" was probably the first song to put lyrics to this melody. Much later, in the second decade of the twentieth century, the melody was appropriated around 1919 for the hymn "Be Thou My Vision", which had been written four years earlier by Eleanor Hull. |
