We have a local deli that offers a 10% discount if you pay in cash....

We still see a lot of restaraunts that have a minimum purchase for credit or debit purchases.

Fees, I suppose.

I have been doing some research on this and It looks like
For payment of debt to a creditor, it is Law that cash must be accepted (understanding that a personal or bank check, or money order is considered as cash)

The grey area seems to be point of retail sale where prior statute and court case precedent, has granted businesses some discretion in what they will or will not accept. And where state law can come into play.

So, what happens when you go to a restaurant, have a nice meal, and when the check arrives and you pull out your cash to pay for said meal, they say, we don't take cash here, but that's all you have on you (cash)?

Cash has to be guarded at all times until it is spent and a merchant has to guard it at all times while it is in his possession. There would be far fewer robberies if there was no cash! Cash is dirty.

I have always interpreted this as meaning that they have to accept cash. that's the way it was tight to me in grade school. On the other hand, if they choose to not sell an item to you because you have cash, I suppose that's legal. It's not a debt.

Just in the news recently, city laws (Philadelphia) that require restaurants to accept cash. Seems like some folks can't afford bank accounts etc. so it can be interpreted as discriminatory.

I think it's funny that some people carry zero cash. Even though I use a cash back credit card for almost everything (pay it off in full each month) I always carry some cash. Several times I've been with a friend or business associate at lunch or somewhere and the card reader was on the fritz and they had no cash to buy their lunch. I hand them a $20 and told them to catch me later. Don't understand how you don't carry some money, just in case.

I don't know anyone that doesn't carry some cash. I use a credit card for 99% of my transactions but always have a little cash on me.

I too almost never have cash on me except for a couple of $100 bills which is pretty much useless when you go to pick up a prescription that costs only 86 cents (happened to me tonight, lol). I had to use my card. I couldn't see giving the cashier a $100 bill for that. The good old bank debit card is more convenient for everyone, as long as its over $5 in most places.

Use a credit card, not a debit card.
