Sometimes you have to change the presentation...or the original artist for the song to be 'revealed'.

Springsteen's 'Thunder Road' was a noisy rock tune (..of sorts) and then he did the unplugged thing and I got it. It's a love song.

This Sting original was an 'OK' song with some melodic 'noodling' from Eric Clapton. Good but nothing special. Think again...

This late Prince lament (...and probably one of his most profound lyric) was secreted on some off-shoot album as a filler. And then it was rediscovered and reinterpreted...

Most of these are a little too sappy for me.
This is a fave, but it's an acquired taste.

I have a warped sense of humor so to me these are love songs i like to play amongst others like Thank You. (if you cant laid playing Thank You, it's hopeless)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooEKvTZQQQk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qug9KWO0o2k

My wife will join in when I start playing it

The rest of the time she'll chastise me for playing depressing things like Blowup The Outside World, Cleaning My Gun, Behind Blue Eyes, Needle and The Damage Done, etc.

No one does dark doomed love like the Mountain Goats. “The Mess Inside” is another great one.

Yes, I love that one too! Darnielle writes the best lyrics, IMHO, of course.

Two beautiful and tragic lost-love songs....

Weird...I can’t get the links to work.
Anyway, the songs are Gordon Lightfoot’s “Bitter Green” and “Miguel”. Not his most popular ones, but my favorites since I can remember.

Tangled up in Blue

i have always been attracted to sad songs too: Some of my favorites to play are-

I'm not in love 10cc
Photographs and memories Jim Croce
When Doves Cry Prince

About 10 years ago I was asked to play at a funeral for a friend of a friend. Didn't really want to do it, but always lived by the motto that "If it was important enough to be asked, it is important enough to say yes" So I played and it went well. Songs requested were the persons 2 favorite songs, Let it Be and Danny Boy. Fast forward 10 years later, and the daughter of the man I played for, who I did not know, is now my significant other and I can't imagine my life without her. And I have come to know the man I played for years ago through stories and pictures. Music is powerful and you never know where music will take you.

I love this story.

Oh, and 10CC was very under-rated.
