There is a newer version ($139.95) that has received similar ratings.

I have the ATH-M50 and like them for music, but I would not say they are neutral for monitors as is backed up here:

I use Audio Technica AD900s as monitors.

A shoutout to the JayBird BlueBuds X headset. I have used a few wireless sets but did not get the clean and accurate sound from them till I tried these. This model is a few years old and JayBird has an updated set available called the Freedom set. I love them when I am at work and can use them... very comfortable... great bass, mid, and treble range... call... text.. and commands on demand.
However..... Apple will be selling a new Airpod wireless set becoming available soon from Apple (late October?). The design and quality looks impressive, but not on the shelves yet. I will probably replace my much-used JayBirds with these... as long as they work fine with an IPhone 5 or 6. They are predicted to be hugely popular here....

This was my first set of decent headphones, and the prices have come down in the past four years, I think I paid almost $475 for them and now they're more like $275. Great headphone for portable devices like iPhone/iPad/Android etc because the resistance is 32 Ohm, meant for these devices:

I thought these were really great sound wise and very comfortable, about $315, and from a new-ish company:

Avoid these at all costs, uncomfortable and mediocre sound:

https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Mo...iser+headphone

I'm going to have a sub $400 headphone shootout up on my website in the next week or two, www.thecluelessaudiophile.com (no commercial interests just my insane hobby) so take a look if you want.
Looking forward to this. I think I now know what I want for Christmas.

Like Sage I am also looking forward to this. Is there any chance you might have an Open Back pair in this shootout like the Senn HD 600 or 650 ?
In the Pro Audio world the thinking used to be that open back had less reflection issues , although I suppose with modern computer design for closed back maybe it is not the issue it once was .

Hey Kev,
Is your interest more for recording purposes or general music appreciation? Just curious.

As stated budget can determine what you purchase. Also, as with most things herein, there is no best. If you have headphones, use them. I simply use my Beats wired or bluetooth and they work fine. I would never worry about using my studio headphones for listening to YouTube recordings. The Beats are great because the are lightweight, comfortable (essential for long plane rides), fold up compactly and sound very good.

I'm a cheapskate when it comes to headphones...

Sennheiser HD 202 $34.95
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-a...phones&index=5

Sound much better than their price point.

Hehe. I have an almost decade old, no longer available HD 212. Cheap. Not much for mixing and tracking but works just fine for Youtube.

Whether for general listening or for recording studio purposes, my requirements are the same with only one difference. For both purposes, I want the most accurate headphones I can afford. For studio use, closed, circumaural headphones are necessary so that the microphones won’t pickup the sound the headphones reproducing. For general listening, either circumaural or supra-auralheadphones will do.

I was absolutely blown away by these headphones. Build quality and sound is way above their price point. I would have blind test chosen these phones over others that are more than twice as expensive. And--they fold flat. And--they have a single cord. That is replaceable/up-gradable.

I just got the HiFiMan 400s in the mail yesterday. It was either that or the Sennheiser HD650s, and I already had the Momentums and the 700s around. Details to come, but Strong front-runner is the Oppo.

Both really, I got a pair of Senn. HD 600 open back specifically for mixing what I had recorded, and found I like them also for late night listening of music and or movie watching .

When actually recording ( tracking) I use some Sen HD 280's closed back because there is virtually no bleed into the mic.

I can attest to Oppo for great value, I have their older BPD -83 Blu Ray player for my home theater system and it is quite good IMO
