USB PC recording devices..
Currently I have a Zoom H5 to record with. I'll either use two external mics or the built-in mics to record. The Zoom replaced an old Tascam US-122 USB device that had two inputs.
I like using the Zoom, but because I like a little organization on my desk and due to the relative frailty of the Zoom, after each use I disconnect everything and put the Zoom away. I had always felt that the Tascam added a bit of noise to my recordings so I'm wondering what's out there now for a modest two input device, budget of around $200. I'd rather use the Zoom to capture ideas and practice sessions and have a desktop device that I can tuck alongside my monitor and keep my mics set up on a permanent basis.

The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is very popular, and the preamps are supposed to be quite good.

RME babyface Older ones go for cheap on ebay and RME keeps updating drivers for it. They work fabulously, great Windows driver (the best). And nice sounding too!

I had a Scarlett 2i2 that I liked, but replaced it with an Audient ID14 which I have to say is a better sounding device.

My sales rep from Sweetwater had recommended both of those too. Thanks for the info on the Audient.

On the more frugal side.. I know Berhinger in general is not "top quality"..
But their USB interfaces get good reviews for lower price category I am sure the others you are looking at are higher quality. But for my home hobby studio it's hard to beat the $80-90 Behringer U-Phoria UMC204HD or for slightly more the 404HD with 4 Ins. BTW I have mine setup on my desk.. In addition, I use it as my PC's sound card.. Plus use 2nd set of outputs go to my home stereo system |
