What a great idea. I'm getting a veneer saw.

Not my favorite task, but a good veneer saw makes it much better.

Sorry, this probably does need some explanation. I’m cutting some veneer (Curly Mahogany and Indian rosewood. You can see the two on the left side of the picture. I have the veneer sandwich held down by a metal straight edge that is clamped to keep everything stable. On the right is the veneer saw of which you mainly see the edge of the blade running along the side of the straight edge. I’m cutting 1/8” slices.

Here’s the before of the veneer sandwich:

Here’s after slicing it:

The picture was pretty tight. Thanks for helping me expand it.

Thanks for that Ryan! That clears up quite a bit.
Do you happen to have a photo of the veneer saw itself, or is that stretching the single photo per day rule??!!
What thickness is the the veneer, and where would you be using this on the guitar? I'm assuming not purfling or binding?

Dan, the veneer is being used as purfling...at least eventually. These were some test pieces to see if they would fit a design scheme. They are .045” thick and roughly 1/8” tall.

Here’s the requested saw picture. A .020” saw blade that is slightly rounded with teeth that switch directions midway through the blade to cut in both pull and push strokes. Handy for cutting thin material.

Aha! I did not get it until I saw the pictures of the saw. I was thinking it was powered, but now the initial picture makes sense...you have a metal straight edge clamped down on what you are cutting at the appropriate width and using this hand held saw to run along the straight edge to make the cut. Seems like it would still be difficult to get it perfect. Thanks for explaining.

July 12: First taste.

You might need to bring that maple by Tom. This might have been the most complete first strum ever.

Tom..I think ours have been top'd!

I've been working, in my mind's eye, on my 'Ultimate Kinnaird' but this will take me back to the drawing board. For a LONG time!

Have you ever tried using your fret slotting blade on the tablesaw to cut purflings? I have a dedicated purflings blade and a zero clearance insert. It creates a lot of smoke, but it gets the job done well, easily, and fast...
