Nice work as usual Steve,
I have a question, my 65 Jazz bass had a fret pop out for some reason. It was hanging on my wall and I heard it hit the floor. Will your method work for me? Or is there another avenue I should be taking?
Thanks for any advice.

You have to ask why did it pop out to start with.

Was the fret stainless, was the Guitar recently refretted, is the fretboard ebony or rosewood or maple, is the fret slot deep enough, is the fret tang too wide for the fret slot.

Lots of things can cause a fret to come loose.

To put the fret back in,

1 - Make sure that first the fret slot is deep enough for the tang.
2 - Make sure the fret radius closely matches the fretboard radius,
3 - Test fit the edge of the tang into the fret slot, is too loose, is it too tight, is it just right
4 - Crimp the fret tang if the slot is too loose, or sand the barbs if the a slot was too tightor widen the fret slot.
5 - Glue the channel with your choice of glue
6 - Clean residual glue of the surface with sandpaper or damp rag if using alphatic glue.
7 - with a hammer lightly tap the fret home, use glancing blows, that is don’t dead strike the fret, hit the fret in a sideways swipe, this minimises damage and premature curvature of the fret back out of the board

String it up and play, fret level as required

Steve

Thank you Steve,
All original, never refretted, Brazilian Rosewood fretboard.
14th fret just popped out. Maybe a humidity issue, not sure.
I'll try your advice.

Thanks again,
Dave

An old school method of putting frets in, I have done this method as well, but I’m explaining it in a way for someone who may not have luthiers tools.

Open the slot up so the fret sits in loosely, a jewellers blade from hardware store works fine. Tweak the shape of the fret to the shape of the fretboard using thumb and fingers.

Mix an epoxy up like 5 minute araldite, layer that into the fret slot, place the fret into the slot and wrap the fret in place with some masking tape, let it sit over night, remove masking tape, you may have to scrape with a razor blade, fret level with a file as required at job completion.
