I think you’ll find tone and playability different enough, but play a bunch of 000–18’s if u can. Looking for more mahogany tone(?), then you might want to try out a 12 fret 000-15SM, if u don’t need 13-14 fret access. The extra body length and hog top produces a kinda unique tone that many of us love! Or a 14 fret 000-15M.

The only question you need to ask yourself is this one:
Will the 000-18 inspire me?

Different tool for a different task.
After I finally got my ideal dreadnought - Collings DS2h, I went in search of a Collings 0002h. My Dreadnought(s) are big, loud - projecting - and with medium strings (of course) - I can hold my own with a bluegrass band and my trio. My 000 is a solo instrument which with light gauge strings can be finger picked or lightly flat-picked. Not appropriate for combo work as I quickly discovered but great for solo, intimate work. Further to another thread about "in praise of having only one guitar" -that's fine if you only play one thing in one situation. You now have a hammer and a screwdriver. Keep going!

personally they are both 2 of Martins best guitars and are different enough /
I have a wonderful Martin Custom CEO-7 OO slope which is one of Martin's best guitars / you should at least check one out for reference |

Just be aware that no matter how "sweet" that 000 may be, part of you will be disappointed (for lack of better word) by the lack of that gut-rattling woody bass end of your D-18. But hey, having two great but different guitars makes you appreciate and respect the differences - and makes you want to play more, which makes you a better player!

and as a vote to facilitate your GAS, I have a CEO-7 AND a 000-18 and would fully support your purchase! I enjoy the subtle differences in these two guitars and the focused yet complex sound of both this 00 and 000. That said, I'm not a dred fan so have found myself transitioning to smaller body guitars in the past couple of years. Short answer to your question: no. Go for it!

Am I crazy to get a 000-18 when I have a D-18?

Since you like the sweet woody tone of mahogany....me too...have you considered the 15 series all mahogany series? I’m a happy owner of a 2.5-month old new 00-15M.

I have D-18 GE custom and a 2015 000-18,happy with both of them, very happy.I also tend to study a lot on the smaller 000-18 stuff that I perform on the D-18.Of course they share the same tone matrix but the smaller body of the 000-18 makes long practice sessions so much more comfortable.

Your ears like what they like. To get something different than your ears prefer just to have something different seems like madness to me. You could easily end up with something different that you never play.

As an owner of a D-18GE and a custom OM-18 I'd say no.

Definitely not crazy!
Like others have said, try as many as you can before you buy. I’ve been able to try a few, and they all seem to be different from one another. Still trying to find “the one”.

The first question is do you prefer mahogany over rosewood? If the answer is "Yes," then by all means get the 00018 and enjoy the tonal and playing differences between the two. I considered the same thing but went with the less expensive 00015sm. Unfortunately I'm still eyeing the 00018....

If it's gotta be a Martin, then it's gotta be a Martin. But if you don't want to be shortchanged on variety, you might check out the mahogany OOO's of other brands.
