Default Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding by Jesse Winchester (cover)

Jesse Winchester released this song on his album "Love's Filling Station" in 2009. He passed away in 2014, a sad day.

I love the images in Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding. You can hear in the lyrics what a good mind he had. This is not a particularly well known song, but it's one of my favorites. I met my wife of the last 50+ years when we were only 18 years old, so I feel that somehow Jesse understood my own experiences of long ago.

The background images are from the Hubble Space Telescope except for the last one, which is the famous NASA "Earth Rising" photo taken from the moon. The guitar is a Santa Cruz OM/PW from 2010.

Thanks for listening!
- Glenn

One of my favorites Glenn, great performance.

In September 2009, he was on one of the episodes of Elvis Costello’s Spectacle series. He sang that song with a such a passion that Neko Case who was also a guest got very visibly choked up.

OK, I admit you did get a lump in my throat started!

Hi Bob,

Thanks for watching!

Yes, I have watched that performance on Elvis Costello's show about 50 times! And I have to say that I love seeing that tear or two forming on Neko Case's cheek late in his song. She looks so pretty there, too!

I would never have known about this song if it were not for the AGF!

Thanks for your kind comments, Bob! I'm glad you thought this came out okay.

- Glenn

Wow, Glenn, a beautiful job on a wonderful song I hadn't known. The melody is just terrific, so pleasing to the ear with some great changes in there that really draw you into this piece.
Once again.........you hit it out of the park!!!
Happy New Year!

Thank you JW!

Yes, the song does take a person back, doesn't it? It has that chord progression (I, iv, ii, V) of so many early rock and roll records back in the late 50s. Jesse Winchester threw in some other changes that made it a little more modern, but for me, at least, it sure sounds like Ritchie Valens' "Donna."

Thanks for taking time to listen and comment! Much appreciated!

Have a great new year in 2021!

- Glenn
