I probably haven't had frets that were as rough as yours, but I've usually smoothed them out just by playing...

Fret Guards (find them on amazon), they're dirt cheap.. or just use painters tape

a bag of 0000 steel or brass wool

Using a small pad of the 0000 wool Polish each fret, problem solved.

Just do what you need to do to protect the fretboard 'tween the frets and cover the pickups..

you're good...
Yes...pretty much this, although I would avoid steel wool...use the bronze wool or 1000 to 1500 grit emery cloth or wet-dry paper.

Thanks all. I’ve got some scotch brite pads on hand, so I’ll try those first before proceeding to anything metal. It’s a little bit strange for a new guitar to have such rough frets, but then it IS a sub $200 guitar that I got on sale for $130, so....

I just bought this to try to spruce up my '83 Tele's frets. I'll let you know how it turned out.

I have a couple of those minus the handle. Fits well over the frets to protect the fretboard.

Green scotchbrite should get rid of the roughness pretty quickly. If you want them even nicer, 600 grit wet or dry paper leaves them pretty nice. If you want them shiny, 1200 grit and/or metal polish

I bought a kit that comes with those guards and fret polish. Works quite good.

Thanks, I'm gonna get to it tonight and see how it works... This Frine fret polish seems to get good reviews.

These work great and come in a variety of grits. Not the cheapest choice but they work great and no mess. I had a bunch on hand from resurfacing bowling balls. Readily available online.

Well, I used the Frine fret polish on my '83 Tele last night, and I have to say I wasn't that impressed..

I did polish the frets first with a 1200 grit mesh pad (similar to what bls82261 posted above), then used the Frine fret polish w/ a soft cloth. Lots of black stain came off, but not a noticeable improvement in the shine.. There was some improvement, I guess, but not a whole lot.

I'm gonna hit it again tonight and see if there's any more improvement. Maybe those 1983 frets were dirtier than I thought...
