The Martin sound: still the best
I spent the afternoon recording tracks with my various guitars.
Although I enjoy all of my guitars, none of them sound like a Martin. The fat tones, the sustain... One quick recording and I was reminded of why I had fallen in love with the acoustic in the first place. Here's a short clip of my Martin OM-21 Special. http://soundcloud.com/syndicatedarts...om-fingerstyle Last edited by JoeCharter; 06-29-2012 at 11:38 PM. |

I knew no difference between acoustic guitars until Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young showed it to me. Fat tones and sustain, for sure - in love with my D-28 Marquis.

Ditto
Love my D-28 for the same reasons and more.

That sounded great Joe .... the thing is, I would have never picked it for a Martin. I heard a lot of sparkle and balance, two things Martins are not known for, although the probably applies more to Martin dreadnoughts.
Either way, it sounded very good, and good playin' to boot !

Sounds great. I just got an OM 21 2 weeks ago and love it. Im about to change strings and would like to know what your using. Did you record with mic or pickup?

The OM is perhaps more balanced than the dreadnought -- but in my experience I get a similar feel/sound no matter what model I pick up. As for the sparkle, I play with long nails and near the end of the clip, I'm really hammering the strings... |

I use John Pearse Phosphor Bronze 12s. I recorded the guitar with an Apogee condenser microphone, straight into the iPad. |

Wow, that was very nice. After all the discriptive words about how a Martin sounds, the recording says it best. I likes my Martin OM too.

Thanks for listening!
Just for comparison, I did a quick recording with my Bourgeois SJ -- similar wood combination but the difference is night and day. http://soundcloud.com/mlao/bourgeois-sj-fingerstyle |

That's some fine fingerstyle Joe. And the Martin does have a nice "fat" sound to all the notes.
Have to say though, between the Martin, Bourgeois and SCGC samples you've posted in the last few days, the Santa Cruz takes it for me. Really special.

Any chance you can post recordings of the same song? Perhaps it was just the tune, but there certainly seemed to be a lot more going on with the Bourgie, which is what I am looking for in a guitar.

The SCGC has a very even sound. Less sustain but very sweet. |
