Bought a guitar yesterday. I think it is a fixer upper.

I read Jasmine was made by Takamine but then someone told me that they separated ways. In either case, looks like someone was removing the pick guard and had some trouble.

Came with a decent case also, not too badly worn although it needs a new handle. But for $15 bucks who is going to complain? Plywood top, might put a solid one on it. The back is not braced all that bad, it might play nicely with a new top. If not, the missing pieces are in the guitar.

that looks like exactly what happened to my Uncles 1937 martin 00-17. his son took it to a party (without permission of course) and laid it on the floor and some drunky the clown stepped on it. what a shame

I have an Ibanez Herringbone dreadnaught. I sold it to a friend who admired it. A couple years later it came back to me in similar condition for free. He had put his foot through it during a argument.
Maybe some day I will have the skill to put a new top on it.

This looks to be the recommended procedure. I just do not know how the neck comes off. When Takamine was making them the neck was joined to the body with five dowels and epoxy.

If the top replacement goes okay, you can then consider replacing the back and sides.

I picked up a Jasmine -no case - for little money, did a set-up, and it is a decent strummer / picker. Currently behind a living room chair 2,350 miles away but I may retrieve JAS next visit.

A usable case is always nice to have. Plus cutting off a top without scoring the binding is good practice.

It is a peculiar sound hole enlargement, but I say play it a while and see how you like it before doing any custom alterations.

Looks better without the pick guard. More like Willie Nelsons guitar now. I'd leave it as is.

I bought a GS Mini about 3 years ago off the forum, and proceeded to replace the top with torrefied spruce, and a friend helped me along the way. He had all the tools needed, and I did as much as I knew how to do. It turned out to be the best sounding GS Mini I have ever played, and with a K&K PWM I put in it, it sounds really nice amped. I will post photos of the process, and it probably cost $150 including the pickup.
