Default Some Beatles footage I've never seen before

Like many of us on this forum, I've always loved the Beatles. Back when it was on the air I also watched "Shindig" on TV on a semi-regular basis. But somehow I missed it the night that the Beatles played:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2b02nZzCOM

Unlike most of those music-based shows of the period, the performers on "Shindig" appear to actually singing their songs rather than lip-synching them.

So it has some value in that alone.

If you watch the video clip all the way to its conclusion, a guy walks out for the closing sequence and starts belting out a song, and it's clear that he has a very impressive voice. He wasn't someone I could identify on sight, and so I stopped the video, backed it up, and the only other name in the credits that seemed plausible was "The Karl Denver Trio."

Yep, that was the guy. I had never, ever heard of him before, so I played a couple more videos of him that I could find.

For modern tastes, a little of him goes a long way, but what a set of pipes! Were any of you UK folks on the forum fans of Karl Denver back when he was popular, or was he more to the tastes of your parents' generation?

Just curious.

That was a real treat. I had never seen this performance before.
Nor, do I believe, ever recall seeing John on the left side of the stage. He was always on the right in those early days wasn't he?
Thanks for posting this!

..outstanding footage....man those lads looked like they were having a blast playing for those screaming girls....no wonder I wanted to be like them....I used to watch Shindig religiously....it was my favorite show....it reran in the afternoon after I got home from school....and I don’t remember seeing the Beatles either...here’s the wiki page....check out the list of performers....probably why I ended up being into such a vast spectrum of musical styles...

That was great, thanks for posting it!

They just got in a j160e at my local guitar store that
looks pretty much in as good a condition as the one
John had there...

Thats a great video of them while they were still the Beatles.. Their later stuff for the most part leaves me cold with a few exceptions. The change was smart though as it kept people buying their LP's.

I might have seen that footage when it first ran, but if I did I don't remember it. And yes yes yes, thankful you brought it to our attention Wade.

Good band. I predict great things for them if they can get some more original material (not that there was anything wrong with their covers). Does anyone in the band write other than that shy looking rhythm guitarist? His song shows some flair. Maybe if he'd come out of his shell a bit and express some opinions he'll get the attention he deserves. The drummer and the bass player are ready to be front-men right now. The bass player's legit R&B voice could really get him credibility as long as they don't get him stuck playing silly love songs or something. The singing drummer has the kind of goofy unpretentious charisma that could be long-lasting. I could see him performing for decades too.

Who decided to re-contextualize "Boys," that Girl Group number? His girlfriend is kissing him and the singer (in an internal monolog, even if sung full voice to show how powerful that feeling is) is shouting "Boys!" Surely, no one could miss that, and I'm sure Twitter will be full of comments on that daring choice.

Musically, this clip really shows off this group's chops. Special shoutout to the lead guitarist who gets a featured solo in every tune even if they don't let him sing a lead. Well, it's getting late, and here comes the sun, but my sweet lord perhaps there's something for him in the songwriting department. Off topic, but I'm worried that my guitar's Humidipak may be leaking a bit. Isn't it a pity that my guitar's humidity control system might be weeping, albeit only gently.

Also off topic, but fully in tune with other threads: Steve DeRosa might be onto something with that praise of the great Gretsch sound, and I think the rhythm guitarist is using Monel strings on his pickup-equipped Gibson.

Unlike most of those music-based shows of the period, the performers on "Shindig" appear to actually singing their songs rather than lip-synching them.

When I was a little boy my whole family (well... not my father ) watched
them on Ed Sullivan on a little black-and-white in my sister's bedroom.

Were they lip syncing then, or were they really playing?

That was the band at the top of their "live" game, playing in the pocket. Very cool!

The Rockabilly aspect of the origins of the Beatles really stands out here.

I agree, they lost that aspect and went Commercial (as Frank Zappa would put it)
