Question about monitoring
Basically what comes through the headphones during recording sounds really hollow and quiet, like an echo -I know some of the quietness is because it's through the computer. But the actual recording sounds more solid. Is this normal no matter what or a side effect of some aspect of my set up?

You are experiencing latency in your system.

If you are listening through open-back headphones while recording, you may be experiencing the effect of mixing a bit of system delay with the room sound. In digital recording, that delay in the return from the computer is referred to as latency. The trip from the mic through the A to D converters to the computer and back out via the D to A converters actually takes time. Advanced recording software/hardware packages eliminate this by offering "direct" monitoring that bypasses the A to D and D to A steps. You can dig through your software manual (which is?) and see whether it offers this option. You would also want to search the info for your USB mic and see if it introduces latency into the signal.
If the delay is short and you don't have the ability to monitor direct, you may need to use close-backed headphones. Another possibility is that your computer's software mixer may be monitoring the USB input as well as the software output. That would also give the same result. You'd want to eliminate the mic signal from your monitoring at the computer's internal mixer. Bob
