Has anyone spent more on upgrades then cost of guitar?
Has anyone spent more on upgrades then cost of guitar? I've spent over $900 on upgrades on my Yamaha LL16. Upgraded Case, Nut, Saddle, Pins, End Pin, K&K Pure Mini and Plek Set-Up. My wife is ready to choke me to death...lol.. I think I have the most expensive Yamaha LL16 in the World...lol

No, everything I buy I keep stock; especially if the mods are largely unworthy of the money spent.

That's a lot to spend on that Yamaha. What difference did the Plek setup make?
I take it you were after a low action and no buzzing frets.

I'd expect you'd get a lot more "yes" answers in an electric oriented forum. Many low end electrics are nice looking, nice playing guitars, and people go through different sets of pickups, controls bridges, tuner, and so forth, in their never ending quest for "tone". (This of course in the period before they have enough money to buy their first PRS, or "real Les Paul".
In your case, if you went in to the guitar in question, with the idea of electrifying it later, I don't honestly think you can count that as "extra money spent", since it was money you should have spent at the time of purchase. If the guitar was A/E to begin with and you opted for something better, then of course, you can. |

My guitars, no. My cars, yes!

Not guitars or cars, but Helene's Harley ended up costing more in custom work than the original price tag of the bike.

Never put more into an acoustic then I paid for it. Perhaps one day I'll salvage a beat up guitar by putting more into it that I paid for it but I can't see putting $900 upgrading an acoustic.

There's not much that one can do to an acoustic to out weight its cost. I can see having a low end acoustic and putting fancy electronics into it. Other than that it see it fairly tough to spend more than $500 for upgrades, maybe a new fancy hard shell case???

No, I've never spent a penny on an upgrade. A routine string replacement doesn't count (that's a string replacement with comparably priced strings to replace a worn out set, not an attempt to improve/upgrade the guitar).

Honestly? I have never spent a penny on an upgrade (with the exception of adding a pickup once). I buy guitars that are set up the way I want them, with a good case and a pickup I like. I always consider resale when I buy any guitar... so upgrades are out (you rarely get any money for upgrades).
I do get that some people just like to tinker with the things they own. If it makes you happy, good on ya!

Not with any acoustic I've ever owned, but I did buy a Sammick Stratocaster copy for $40, and put several hundred dollars into it (everything but the body has been changed out).
Now I have a nice looking Stratcaster that has custom electronics (Graph Tech Ghost piezo saddles and pre amp, separate volumes for that system and the magnetic pickups, a Gilmore switch for the electronic pickups), a big headstock Fender neck (S series), gold hard ware, black pick guard with Lace red pickups. |
