Just got an email from LMI, they're wrapping it up.

Default LMI is closing down

I got that email too. That's very sad indeed, I ordered several times from them in the last eight years

At the same time I've noticed that StewMac has been bowling me over with ads, price reductions, and sales. Hope that isn't a sign. Perhaps the transfer business from LMI will bolster them.

Saw that on instagram.

Odd, because they were running social media ads right up until they put that up.

Yeah that's too bad. May they move on to greener pastures. 30 years is a good run. It says they started in 1994 but I would have sworn I bought wood from them earlier then that. First guitar I made was '92 and I thought I bought from them at the time.

Super bummed about this. Such a great resource, not to mention fine people to do business with. I hope someone will pickup Royal Blackwood, because I’ve really come to like that as a bridge/fingerboard material.

1994 would be the date when they incorporated (Luthier's Mercantile became LMII).
I have catalogs going back to the early-1980's.

LMI was originally owned by Todd Taggart and Tom Peterson who bought the business from Bill Lewis who called it Bill Lewis Music Supply (more or less). I did business with Bill, and briefly worked for him, since +/- 1970. The beat goes on!

There were a lot of good articles and tips- and a nice DIY feel- in those
early catalogs. I recently got (again) one of them on ebay from the
mid-80s. Nice.

I always thought that there was enough information in the early Lewis/LMI catalog for the self motivated would be luthier to build successfully, and without the store-bought crutches that have directed so many modern builders down what looks like a rabbit hole to me..
