2 high-end guitar recordings: links and sound now fixed
My apologies for the technical problems, it should work now!
I recently recorded 2 handbuilt, somewhat similar guitars, both with the same strings and recording setup. The first is by Ron Pinkham, the second by Tom Rein. Both are 14-fret Euro spruce and rosewood. The Rein is 15 1/4 inches lower bout and 4 1/4 deep. It's young at 9 months old. The Pinkham is 15 3/4 wide and 4 inches deep, so roughly the same body volume, but has been around for 20 years. Both are lovely guitars, with some tonal similarities but noticeable tonal differences when you play them. I know how I describe those differences in my head and what they mean to me in terms of characteristics, what I'm curious about is whether: a) Others can hear the tonal difference from a reasonable quality recording (assuming decent headphones or speakers) b) If so, how would people describe those nuanced differences? What I'm after here is (yet another) exploration of the value of sound clips in helping us to describe what we hear and whether they are in fact of any use in forming aesthetic preferences and judging a guitar. By the way, there is no processing on these recordings, they are as-is. Pinkham: http://snd.sc/YK3YwP Rein: http://snd.sc/10mGkDs Dennis Last edited by dennisczech; 03-30-2013 at 08:50 AM. Sorry guys, the issues should be sorted now.

The first clip is louder and has a bit more low frequency stuff going on.
Is that the guitar or the mic position? I'm guessing you were a tad closer to the mic. I hear differences between the two guitars but nothing huge. My experience is that recordings smear over subtle differences in tone; you're probably hearing more difference than we are. Jim McCarthy |

Overall very close but the Pinkham has more body resonance in the recording.

I think it would easier to tell the differences if the pieces played were the same. That said, to my ear the older guitar seems to hold the quality of the notes for longer. The younger guitar has some of the same note quality initially but it fades more quickly.

I liked the Pinkham best for sure.

I liked the Pinkham as well. It seemed to sustain better and the trebles sounded richer and more full to my ears.
