Hello. I am writing this for my brother who is not on line. He is thinking of getting a new epiphone SG. With my help he will be buying on line (from Sweetwater probably). So...the reviews overall sound very good; reasonable price; slim neck; decent pick ups, etc. But of course they don't have that in music stores where we live so can't really test it out first hand. I told him if he doesn't like it or has any doubts, we can return it. Would appreciate any comments/thoughts from those who may have experience with this guitar. My brother and I play as a duo. He is an excellent guitar player.

There are a number of different Epiphone SGs. I have one from I think 3-4 years ago, Pelham Blue with P90s. I paid $400 for it new and it leaves nothing to be desired. It’s not my favorite neck, but I don’t play this guitar all that much and I don’t have any problem with the neck. The quality is way better than I’d ever expect anywhere near that price point. I took it to a tech to rewire the volume and tone controls (master vol, master tone) and he was really impressed with everything about it.

Like Ray says, many options
Hard to give an opinion without knowing what the target is. I think if you guys were looking for something like a "Standard" - set/bound neck, dual humbuckers, etc, they are pretty solid guitars. like this: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...tandard-cherry if he's looking for a "special" or something lower cost wise, with a bolt on neck, etc, a good starter guitar to test the waters perhaps. For example: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...ecial-ve-ebony With any of these, the case/gigbag is a separate buy. this would be a definitely contender for a proper hard case - IMO its worth it for a guitar like the Epi SG Standard for example https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...c-solid-guitar can you cite some examples on what is being looked at? Sweetwater is THE place to go IMHO. they have excellent customer service and very fast shipping with excellent packing

As has been mentioned there are various models of Epiphone SG types. I haven't played the current models, but I have played some other recent Epiphones.
Epiphone QC in my experience is average for the price, and Sweetwater might get you higher odds in avoiding a lemon or dealing with that if you do. Back 20 years or more ago, the stock Epiphone pickups were usually unimpressive, but current models have had sounds and response that I like well enough to keep. The minor electric parts like pots and switches are often better now too, and even if they need replacing down the lines, those things are inexpensive. Mechanical stuff like tuners and bridges are just fine. Things to get along with your SG? A right-angle ended guitar cord for the top mounted output jack and a suede, neoprene, or wide strap in case your example has neck dive balance like many SGs are prone to. The right strap fixes that issue, and even though the SG never gets mentioned as one of the top 3 classic electric guitar designs, it can really work in a lot of contexts.

I've played the IBG SG several times and have to say I've been thoroughly impressed.

Frank brings up something not to be over looked
the right strap.. brushed leather straps like "Levi's" are what I've been using, I have 2 SGs, with those straps they don't move

I owned the Worn version of the Epiphone SG with P90s and thought is was a nice guitar. They are not very expensive and play well. I never did get along with it, but it was only because I'm not an SG type. But the guitar was quite nice for the price!

I would avoid the cheap Epiphones like the plague.
I've seen some of the 200 dollar Epis in my local shop. Honestly, I think they were made with green wood and the QC is absolutely horrible. Sharp frets, bad intonation, mediocre pickups, etc. I am not even talking about wood choice, finish, etc. Looking at the specs on sweetwater, I would be looking at their 500 dollar plus versions at a minimum. Remember, you get what you pay for. In this case, 500 dollars gets your some more time being dialed in, better pickups, maybe some better electronics (no idea on that) on the inside, and wood that has been seasoning for longer. Honestly, the viper blue looks amazing to me and it's one of the ones I would be looking at personally if I was in the market for an SG

While it is frequently stated that returns are doable with Sweetwater, they're hardly free. It's not like a local big box that gives you 30 days. I would tend to want to either buy used or with GC or Sam Ash for a Gibson...same QC issues to surmount.
Also, some SGs are more stable than others. |
