Absolutely it's a great mixing tool !! I've heard about Auratones for years but never tried them until I read about them in this thread a few days ago. Thanks a lot for the info guys !!! It's appreciated !! I always though mixing in mono would be a good idea but never tried it till now....now I see the benefits of it. I also have one of the rebadged Behringer cube that's branded Auratone. I'm not sure what the story behind it is, but I sure like mine !!

Yes, you must have a lava lamp in your studio, it's an unwritten law.

Default A great budget alternative for $59

Have any of you folks tried the WONDERBOOM blue tooth speaker? It sells on Amazon.com for $59 and it sounds surprisingly... er wonderful.

Mine was delivered today. I bought it so I could have music in the bathroom. It's water resistant so that it's submersible for up to 30 minutes. I haven't tried that but I'm loving this little cheapie speaker.

Didn't expect it to sound this good. It seems like it should be useful for referencing mixes on a budget real world mono speaker.

Mono sound seems to be making a comeback due to cell phone speakers and bluetooth speakers. It's another reason to own a mono mix cube.

Mono is the default screw-up format for all the rest, ie., "If anything goes wrong, your product is going to end up playing out in mono." Might as well be compatible and ready.

I agree with the above about mono. I recall the Yamaha DX7 keyboards had really cool stereo patches, some of which disappeared in mono. The mono button is your friend!

I went with Event Opals in 2008, replacing my JBL L100. The L100 were the consumer version of the 4311. I picked mine up used and really enjoyed them, for like 30+ years. There's a thread I started on Gearslutz about the Opals that's now 54 pages long. You can't get the original recipe. Something about sourcing the beryllium for the tweeters. The Opals have a very wide sweet spot and even with only a 10" woofer, handle the low end for pretty much everything but techno.

I have a pair of Sentry 100 pushed by a Crown D60 at another station. At both stations, I have Radio Shack Minimus 7s as "my little speakers."

BTW, I recently had some repair work done on the L100 EQ controls and am using
them as rear surrounds in my living room. They like it there!

The problem with stereo is you have to be sitting in the sweet spot to enjoy it, most people don't listen to music that way, with stereo they may only hear what's coming from the speaker closest to them. Mono is good.

Question as I am really just over the past year getting into the more serious (albeit stiil hobbyist) side of recording. My DAW allows for summing to mono. Would I still benefit from a single mix cube? If so, it will simply be added to list of all the other things I “need”. You know, like the 2008 J-45 I almost bought yesterday.

Seriously though, I will gladly add equipment that will help me get better mixes.

The benefit of Auratones isn't just in using one in mono. It is also in listening to a band-restricted but phase coherent playback of your mix. I use a pair of Auratones or Avantones to check the basic integrity of my mixes all the time. My console has the sum to mono as well. I use both. You can also bring up both channels of a stereo mix on two faders assigned to one side of the stereo bus to listen mono through one speaker.

If you sum to mono and listen on stereo monitors the mono image is placed in your phantom center channel. If you pan it left or right and listen through a single speaker then the location of the sound and speaker hardware is the same. To my ear the center phantom channel never sounds as solid as A hardware supported image from an actual speaker. YMMV.

When you sum to mono and listen through a single full range speaker (no crossover) it's extremely revealing for the above reason and because you have no crossover to distort the vocal range. Stereo mix cubes would be nice for the reasons Bob gave but I've run out of desk top real estate... I'm trying to figure out where my lava lamp will fit.
