The traditional song, “Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child” is my sad favorite.

Kishibe's "Hana / Flower" is an exquisite mix of beauty and melancholia in open D.

He only released one album, but was a big influence on artists such as Paul Simon, and Bert Jansch
I'm also surprised that nobody's mentioned this guy. How many guitarists do you you know who play a show, and have people call out from the audience "play something depressing"?

Martin Simpson and his guitar does sad pretty well - one example:
And I'll add Doug Young's Missing You - a beautiful tune. Best, Jayne Last edited by jaymarsch; 09-08-2020 at 09:44 AM. |

The saddest record I ever heard is by Robert Pete Walker - it was recorded in a prison yard where he was doing time. You can hear birds (the proverbial free birds, I assume) singing outside the yard.
All solo acoustic guitar, and some real heart-wrenching great songs on there. Can't recall the title but it gave me shivers every time I played it. |

i know this is probably not the kind of thing shown elsewhere on this thread, but this one of the most beautiful and saddest songs I know, with great fingerpicking beginning, She's Gone by Black Sabbath:

The Crow on the Cradle
Here is my suggestion: The Crow on the Cradle
Jackson Browne and David Lindley did a great version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Mqc8qHmDd8 Also, Mary Black's version is beautiful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B91RbyYZc_A |

I can’t think about John Hurt without getting a little wistful about all the good performing years that he missed in the prime of this life, and how much joy he played with when he finally got the chance again. Anyway, this is a classic you probably know already:
And here’s a Guy Clark song that gets me sometimes. Just can’t beat his writing... “I’ve got an old guitar won’t ever stay in tune, I like the way it sounds in a dark and empty room” |
