You can only play one at a time so "need" is pretty subjective. Unless you are a professional you probably only need two, a nice acoustic and a versatile electric. That being said, I have 2 acoustics and 5 electrics, and 2 baritone Ukuleles.

I've bounced around and every time I have three guitars, I find the need for a fourth. Every time I have five guitars I feel gluttonous and get rid of one.

So, for me....four is my magic number.

1. very nice main fingerstyle guitar
2. nice twelve-string
3. nice solidbody electric
4. back porch guitar

Hi folks,

I would like to cite the wonderful famous german songwriter Wolf Biermann with a part of an old song which is originally meant for women.
"One is much too much for me and two are far to little."
I practise that for many years (only for guitars) and feel good with that.

So all the best

Just one. I have a second that is exactly the same for a backup.

Yes, this question has been asked about a hundred times and the answers seem exactly the same. Save yourself some time and do a search and you will get a thousand answers.

Ive bought and sold a ton of guitars. I can only speak for me and my "needs"

I need a Martin style dreadnought of some sort. I play bluegrass festivals and jams, this is not really optional. I could get by with other styles of dreadnought like slope shoulder, but i need a dreadnought. I gravitate towards d18s. Ive had a few of them and liked every one of them. I currently have a custom d18ge that is every bit of the guitar my martin d18 authentic was.

I also need something smaller. Something like an 0 or 00. I like to have something to play around the house, that i can play on the couch or what have you. My gibson lg2 will always be that guitar as i will never get rid of it.

And i need an electric if we're counting those. Just one though. So i guess thats 3 guitars total

Thats bare minimum "needs filled" i dont NEED anything else beyond that. But i do like to have an om of some sort. I think they might just be the best design for an acoustic guitar ever dreamed up, and a good one is heavenly

I like to have the animals go two by two, which is why my lonely 00-18 will be joined by a Pre*War Guitar Co. 000-18 next year (late summer-ish estimated delivery date). I should be good on the acoustic front then, but I do find myself looking at photos of my old Telecasters a lot of late, and then going on to Reverb and looking at Tele's for sale......so there may be one of those in my future too....

How many do I need? One. Though in case of emergence (aka one needs to be in the shop for repairs) I always have two. But if I gigged I might need more for specific purposes. And if I was a full blown pro I’d need even more.

All I know for sure is if I had Jackson Browne’s collection I would have enough. Probably.

My own guitars I have two. One humbucker-equipped electric and now one acoustic. I inherited a few guitars though. I tried having multiple guitars in different tunings but found that I didn’t really play the alternate-tuned guitars much at all.

Like stated above need has nothing to do with it.
I only use one guitar when i play out.
I saw the indigo girls play once.
They had a very busy guitar tech that
would exchange there instruments between
songs. Seems like every two or three songs they
were playing different instruments. it was
fun to watch. I'll bet they travel with 35 different instruments.
I have 3 guitars i play. a taylor bto dred
a 71 martin d28s 12 fret dred and an old
33 supertone parlor. I have gigged with
all 3 but generally take only one.
So i really only need one. I want more though.

I’m an acoustic player.
As I play out for church, I NEED three.
A good six string, a good 12-string, and or my more “selfish” needs a travel guitar.

I have all that I need.
I do continue to want though.
