SOLD!: 1989 Martin M-38 - PRICE REDUCED!
SOLD! Shipped to lower 48
No trades at this time, please. Thinning the herd a bit this fall and I'm selling my 1989 Martin M-38. I bought this a few years back because I wasn't having any luck finding a Jorma Kaukonen model M-30 knowing this was very similar. I finally landed a Jorma so this one is deserving of a new home. It plays beautifully and the setup is spot on in my opinion. The M-38 is the depth of a 000 but a slightly wider bout like a jumbo. The depth is very comfortable for you bad-shoulder guys while the larger soundboard really covers the lower end without the boominess of a dreadnaught. Notice the gorgeous wide grain Sitka top that could easily pass for Adirondack but according the Martin specs, it is Sitka. The tone of this guitar is full, clear and balanced and will not disappoint. Condition is excellent with no deep scratches, dents or cracks. It has been played and is not mint. I found a few tiny pinhead-size impressions on the top that look to be partially touched up as shown in the photo. They are extremely minor but if you are as OCD as I am with my guitars, I wanted to let you know. There appears to be two small binding repairs as shown in the photos. Interesting info on the M-Series Martins
I found some interesting info on these awesome M-Series Martins:
The M-Series Martins are based on the modification done for David Bromberg in the mid 1960's through Marc Silber, Jon Lundberg, and legendary repairman Mario Martello to an arch-top Martin F-9 rebuilt as a flattop guitar. Matt Umanov built a second M-Series guitar for Bromberg soon after. In the 1970's, these guitars toured the college circuit with Bromberg and developed enough of a reputation that Martin created a new size guitar in 1977, and named these new models M-36 and M-38. Also known as a 0000 size for a while, these guitars became very popular among many of the best known finger style guitarists in the US such as Stefan Grossman, Jorma Kaukonen, Woody Mann, Steve Earl, etc. who all have had signature M style guitars made for them by Martin. The M-Series guitars have the volume of the D-Series, and the balance of the 000
