The honest answer is that I could do 99% of what I need to do with one acoustic guitar. For electric, I would probably opt for one Fender single coil guitar and one P90 or humbucker guitar to cover 99% of my rock music.
Obviously, I'm going way past what is needed. The reasons are many. I love guitars. I love variation in sound. I like supporting small-shop builders. I like the community around guitars and the discussions. And I really do like playing the variety.

I have 14. Half of each. Plus a banjitar, uke and a baritone. It's fun.
Still lusting. Still playing. I haven't affected the families finances. I have bought and sold 150 over 20 years. Tabulating all my losses is still probably less than your neighbors 10 year old F-150. Back to your question how many do you need? Well if you had a bunch of tools like slides, capos, nut risers, nashville tuning strings, truss rod / luthier tools, extra saddles you could make your one sound like more. Then adjust your right hand. Play up on the neck, maybe on the sound hole with a felt pick? Or play near the bridge with different plectrums and fingers. I guess all you would need is one. Just some setup time to reconfigure, restring to get a whole new feel and tone from your one and only. Last edited by tippy5; 11-19-2018 at 12:22 PM. |

if I had all the money I’d ever spent on guitars, I’d spend it on guitars...

Need is such a relative term. If I were making my living as a guitarist/musician I would feel comfortable saying that I needed x number of guitars but that isn't the case for me. If we are speaking about my mental health then I would have to say that I need at least one. Speaking as a serious hobbyist, I need at least three. I currently own five with another one on the way and two set to be sold.

Well, I NEED one. Because if I was guitarless, I'd likely lose my sanity (and a lot of supplemental gigging/teaching income too!)
But...let's see... I need an acoustic and an electric, for sure. And a nylon string. So that's 3. But I really need two electrics...a tele for the twang gigs and an archtop for the jazz gigs. So 4. But the gypsy jazz scene around here is much more active, so I need a SelMac style, as a regular flat top just doesn't cut it. So now I'm up to 5. And one for the office...so 6. And one with a whammy bar, in case I ever start a surf band. So Jazzmaster makes 7. Oh, and it's nice to amplify those acoustics, but I don't want to cut holes in them...So I have an Ovation and a Godin to cover steel and nylon plugged in duties. So that's 9. And then, my archtop is kind of expensive, and it can't really be replaced easily, so I should have a backup Godin Kingpin. So 10. And then I always "need" one more...so... |

I've enjoyed having one great fingerstyle guitar, one great flatpicking strumming guitar and usually some sort of carbon fiber guitar to take outside and play hard when needed.
If money allows its fun to have varieties of wood types and brands to enjoy. But those 3 acoustics are usually my bare minimum. I enjoy having pickups on most all of my instruments. |

I tend to agree. If, and I mean If, I had zero guitars I would not have an "unmet" need. I don't need a guitar to live. When it comes to need there are just the basics, food, shelter, water, etc. Survival determines need. Therefore, "I want....." is the correct question. Our quality of life may change depending on certain things that we either have, have had, lost or acquired. My enjoyment would change if I lost all of my guitars and had none. I can live without one. But I would not choose to live that way, as long as I can afford to own and play a guitar. I am not a professional, far from it. But don't get me wrong, I love to play, and I love seeing and talking guitars. It is a whole lot of fun. Just my take on if I "need" a guitar.
