New drone... some early vids...
So I had a Blade 350 QX3. I didn't buy the one with the gimbaled camera, because I figured I already had a GoPro and could just use the mount. Besides the nauseating jellying of the video, it was impossible to frame shots because I didn't have any video link. But it sure is fun flying a drone that can hit upwards of 58MPH and can do multiple backflips!
Anyways, I wanted to take more "cinematic" shots when I go to different places. My brother had a DJI Spark that he was getting rid of and upgrading, so he asked me if I was interested. Of course I said yes... I traded him my blade and some cash. First impressions - this is one stable drone! Even with the wind gusts today it held position very well, especially considering its diminutive size. It also handled extremely well as was very stable in flight. I find it amazing that the video feed was very responsive, considering how little room there was to pack electronics. Even at great distances I got smooth video feed. It's capable of about a 4 mile range but I wasn't brave enough yet to test that, especially with no line of sight after about a half-mile. Video quality seemed really good, with the gimbal providing good stability. I will say that the camera stabilization was not as good when panning as it was straight-line, but a lot of that could me my lack of experience with this drone. Other features in this tiny drone are obstacle avoidance, return-to-home that was very accurate, and indoor capability. There are also gesture recognition features that I haven't tried yet. Video link does not work, at least not on my iPad.
Never mind, it works now.

It works now. I said so in my revised message. Someone deleted it though.

Thanks guys!
Dru I'd love to take credit for the landings, but the Spark has an auto-land feature when it gets within a few inches of the ground thanks to its lower sensors (lidar I believe...) Also what allows it to hover indoors. |

Nice videos. You've reminded me that I need to replace the FPV camera on my quad.
I convinced my father to get the DJI Spark after he saw what i was doing with my scratch built S500 with Eagle Tree Vector controller and 3 axis go-pro gimbal. They sell them at Best Buy along with replacement parts. I envy his wide open space location in East Texas. He could easily do long range FPV with his HAM license. Something I can only dream about living so close to DC and a very active airport. I am just outside the 5 mile radius for the airport no fly zone and the the 30 mile radius DC no fly zone. here is a short clip of a GPS test. very stable and the gimbal is working good too. No Jelly. https://youtu.be/kjqZiiUQmpA

When I first read the word "drone" I though the Borg had invaded.

Cool vids. My first drone, over four years ago, was a Walkera without a stabilized gimbal. Then I went to a Phantom Pro 3 which I've had for 3 years. And, finally, last year, I got an Air. The Air is awesome and it's great for videos and pics.
Here's a short video: Pic:

The jitters in the rapid panning are most likely attributable to the "rolling shutter" effect within the camera itself rather than the stabilization.

Still trying to figure out how these things are legal.

Why wouldn't they be?

They are legal to own but it is my understanding they need to be registered with the FAA if you plan on flying it over populated areas. I don't know all of the rules and regulations but there are most definitely flight ceilings that must be observed (again the FAA has all of this info while I do not.)
A work colleague of mine is a licensed UAV pilot (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle=drone) and has spelled out the why's and wherefore's of using a drone and the permissions the FAA requires. If anyone is wondering about why these rules exist think about the invasion of privacy if a drone suddenly shows up over someone's backyard or outside one's window. And let's not forget the recent near-misses with commercial aircraft. I'm all for personal freedoms but not at the expense of 200 lives lost because some bonehead flew his drone in restricted airspace and it was sucked into the engine of a landing jetliner which caused it to crash. I'm not saying it has happened yet but there have been several near-misses recently. Best, PJ
