Default Recent Razos

Two years ago I took delivery of Razo #19 at the SBAIC. It has continued to develop into a wonderful instrument and has become one of my favorite guitars.

Since then Jonathan has continued to build some amazing instruments and I wanted to share a couple of his recent builds.

First up is a stunning Coco--Razo #25 with the following specs:

Cocobolo Back & sides
European Spruce top
Ebony binding/fingerboard/bridge
Inlays in Amboyna Burl
Scale length - 25.4"
bone nut with 1-3/4" spacing
Bone saddle with 2-1/4" spacing
Gotoh Gold tuners
Evo Gold Fretwire

And now the photos!

I discovered his work when I was posting about segmented rosettes on a "budget". I'm a fan.

I was able to play this guitar at Jonathan's house and let me tell you, it's a stunner! He has a really unique voicing and his guitars have an amazing amount of low end for the body size.

I unfortunately missed out on seeing/playing the bois de rose guitar which would have been great because my michaud has a very similar set of woods. Jonathan and I plan to get together the next time he has that guitar back in his hands.

I have to agree with this statement-

I got a chance to play the Bois de Rose guitar over a quick stop in Dallas, such a beautiful piano like tone. Though I didn't get to see or play the cocobolo guitar- here are some sound clips Jonathan forwarded over to me!

Can't wait for my build to start soon!

Default Recent Razos

That Bois de Rose Razo GA was a commissioned build for a friend of mine and I know another AGF member has reserved one of his remaining sets of this wood for a commissioned build. It really is one of my favorite back and sides sets that I've seen.

I checked in with the progress on his build a couple of times over the Summer and that's when I saw and fell for the Nicaraguan Cocobolo GA spec build that Jonathan had on the bench at the same time. My resistance wore down after a couple of more visits as that build progressed and I put down my deposit to reserve that build.

Here are some pictures of the Nicaraguan Cocobolo GA before the finish went on to give you an idea of the temptation that I was faced with:

Didn't realize that you ended up with the Coco GA, Doug--I love the looks of it and would love to hear it!

Hoping you're bringing it down with you in March?

-I'm still undecided on which shape I'm going to end up going with. He's building a couple OM's in coco and bois de rose next, so i'll probably wait to play the bois OM before ultimately deciding on the shape.

-I do however know it will be Bois de Rose back and sides with a European spruce top. Jonathan had a handful of Bois de Rose sets and I believe they were almost all snatched up immediately for custom builds. How could they not- here's my set -

I’ve always like his work. I see some Ray Kraut in his style. Beautiful guitars.

I've never heard of it. Tonal properties? Usual price tag?
