How much leeway is there regarding headstock thickness when installing tuners.

Just checked some older Grover Rotomatics, and those are designed for a maximum peghead thickness of 5/8". You can go a hair thicker, but you will lose string space on the post, and the concave shape means there will be a larger gap around the nut.
