Are any of you familiar with Phonic PA systems?
A friend of my daughter in another Alaskan city has seen an ad for a Phonic Powerpod Plus PA system at what seems like a very reasonable price. It’s basically a powered mixer with a pair of speakers. So my daughter asked me what I know about them.
Which is zilch. The Phonic brand name is somewhat familiar, but I’ve never owned or used any of their products, not knowingly, anyway. So I thought I would post here to learn what you can tell me. So any of you out there own this or any other similar rigs from Phonic? What can you tell us? Thanks in advance for anything you can teach us. Wade Hampton Miller

I haven't personally used their stuff, but I remember in the 90s I saw them at NAMM every year. They got their start as a DJ equipment company, low priced but sort of disposable. Reading a few reviews, it doesn't seem like they get kudos for quality, but rather for price and ability to get loud.

While I never owned any Phonic equipment I play at a place that has a Phonic P.A. head going into Yamaha 15s with horns as the house system. They even have mike stands with SM58s. It's easy for me to just plug in my Gibson into my Red Eye and it into the Phonic box. I can dial in a decent sound and it's very powerful. It fills the house, a large sized room, barely cracked. It is overkill for my solo acoustic show. It must be fairly durable as they have live music 2 or 3 nights a week. It's 160 miles from home so I love the fact that I can travel light and not worry about hauling my own stuff or it being ripped off out of my truck.
I guess powered mixers are outdated, but we all used them for many years and they did the job very well before this new light Class D amplifier stuff came out.

Thanks, guys. I told my daughter what you’ve written in reply, and made the suggestion that her friend go check it out and take a listen to it. The price being asked is only $225 for a multi channel powered mixer with two speakers, which seems fairly cheap if it works and sounds reasonably good.

You see them on ebay all the time. Cheap quality and harsh distortion when the volume is cranked is what I'd expect, like any of the cheap Chinese stuff.

Thanks, Mike. The guy has a garage band and wants to be able to gig out occasionally. Cheap, loud and distorted might be just perfect for him.
