Default John Dowland / Jacob Lindberg lute CD

This disc sounds like what playing a renaissance lute feels like, to me (I hope that makes some kind of sense!). The recording is close and the room seems small and not very live, which in this case works well, I think. A quickish (not in the Paul O'Dette sense, but in the response of the instrument's trebles), maybe cloistered sound, mostly top-notch playing, with good phrasing and sensitive ornaments.
I want a lute.

Until you find yourself a good student lute, you can adjust the tuning on a classical guitar and start playing lute pieces from tablature.

Here's a guide to get you started:

https://lutesocietyofamerica.org/wp-...ar-Players.pdf

Also, find yourself a copy of "58 Very Easy Pieces for Renaissance Lute".

Study the video performances of Jacob Heringman. He recorded performances of all 58 during the pandemic as part of his "Lockdown Lute" project.

The guitar won't sound like a lute, but doing what I suggested above will get you started. Have fun!

Thanks for those links. Most of the time my guitar has the third string at F#,
because my heart and head are really in the 15-16th century.

I want a lute.

This one's been on sale for ... ever. It's the only one on CraigsList within a 250-mile radius of Morro Bay right now.

I have an 8-course student lute from the 70s. Not parting with it though.

I think Mel Wong is still building period instruments but it's a long drive from where you are. The gentleman who gifted me my lute was one of his apprentices. I would commission Mel if I ever decided to get a baroque lute.

If you ever need to pick-out strings, consult Chris Henriksen who runs Boston Catlines. Even here on the West Coast, most lutenists seek him out since he knows what strings can bring out the right qualities from certain lutes. Strings By Mail sells some lute strings but Chris has the best assortment.

Thanks for that additional info, especially about Boston Catlines. No doubt strings would be an issue..
