TV's (and most electronics) are considered disposable now. When I was a kid we had a TV repairman in town. He'd come to your house and fix your TV, or in the critical cases take it back to his shop (no small task, those 19" CRT Curtis Mathes were heavy). That's a job that doesn't exist anymore.

I'm going back this week to get another one for my youngest.

No, not really. My $75 32" Vizio does everything that I want and need it to do...

Partially true, but my friend owns a place that repairs LED/LCD TVs and gets jobs every week.

Not only did we have a TV/radio repair shop back in the 50s, the local drug store had a tube-testing machine and a large selection of tubes.

When our ancient Philco TV would act up, dad would look in the back and see what tube was glowing more brightly than the others.
I’d run the thing up to the drug store and stick it in the tester, and if it showed “bad”, I’d buy the replacement for a couple of bucks and dad would stick it in and the TV generally worked.....

Yup, it's amazing what you can get these days.

18 years ago, my wife and I decided to splurge on our first Christmas in which we were married. We bought a 32" Sanyo CRT TV for $400 and a cheap, chipboard "entertainment center" for $100 from Walmart. We STILL have the TV in our bedroom after all of these years!

Last year, Best Buy had a Black Friday thing where they were selling like 58" (?) TV's for $250. We bought two.

We didn't tell the kids, so we sent them to my parents for the afternoon. We set one up in the living room upstairs and had Star Wars playing on it when they got home. They stayed up there and watched, and I told them I was going to go downstairs. They eventually came downstairs, and I was sitting in front of this huge TV playing Mario Kart 8. They flipped out. I think we played games for days after that together. We still play games on it and watch them together just about every weekend.

for just under $5000.

My Son gives me crap about it, urging me to upgrade to this or that.
He gave me a Blu-Ray player that won't connect to it, so I watch DVD's with my old player, much to his dismay.
And yes, I can (and do) still watch VCR tapes from the library.
He thinks I'm crazy.

But.. and here's the really strange part.. I estimate it has maybe 350/400 hours on it in 17 years.
I don't watch TV.
Maybe a movie every month or two.. maybe.

Yes, I could update/upgrade for $500 and get A LOT MORE TV, but what for?

Okay, I'll go crawl back in my cave and read a book by firelight.. yes, a real book, with paper pages.
It might pay for itself in energy savings.

I just peaked at Amazon and saw 2018 65" models for about $700. So tempting... we have an 8yo 60" Sharp in the LR that could fit 65-75" in that same space. It functions fine, but the mid-range sound is awful, so it's difficult to follow dialogue w/o blasting out the house.

I did for a while until I realized what I really want on my old tv is 1 more hdmi port and I'd be fully satisfied. That's not enough to make me upgrade immediately.

Plus you can get an HDMI splitter (2 in, 1 out) for around $10 to $20 (maximum) if you really want it that badly.
