I owned one and have played a number of them. I usually can’t tell.

I’ve played several fan fret guitars and surprisingly found them as easy to play as “normal” guitars, very quickly forgetting there was any difference.

You know that is an excellent question. On a fan fret, the frets form a theoretical hypotenuse so they are essentially a bit wider. I do not have much experience with them, but have never noticed a difference on the ones I have played. But I might not notice a tiny difference in neck width either. Some people do.

I'm building one now and they play just fine. A 2nd hand Avian is your route to trying out a fan fret. I owned one to experiment with before commissioning my build (linked in my signature).
