Default World Cup, anyone?

Any soccer (football) fans here? USA kicks off play vs. Wales in a few moments.

Yup. Footie fan here. Just watching USA v Wales. Hope the USA does well. Stlll nil all, at the moment.

PS I'm a neutral: Scottish. Once upon a time Scotland used to play football too. That was a long, long time ago, when the Elves ruled Middle Earth.

PPS And I am old enough to remember Soccer annuals from the 1960s, so don't let anyone from this side of the pond kid you on that 'soccer' is an alien word to the UK. I have a story on the UK origin of the word, 'soccer'. Dunno if it's true but it sounds plausible.

Don't worry about the draw boys - you were never going to win against Wales. It has taken 64 years just to get to the event! And as the song says - "We're still Here". When you play England on Friday, you'll have every Welsh fan behind you. I'd suggest that your team stops playing "pretty" football and starts to understand that its war!!!!

Silly challenge by Zimmerman, well-taken penalty by Bale. Not a fan of the USA coach Berhalter's subs. Sure, Wales was coming into the game, but pulling your most creative attackers for pure defenders with 15min left wasn't smart--the US isn't the kind of team that can just sit back in a shell for 15-20min, and that was the result.

I wonder what sort of contest Iran will put up in their last two matches. Is England finding a spark, or is Iran just not up to the task?

The favorites in the other two games so far held serve, Ecuador and Netherlands. Tomorrow we get to see two of the favorites, Argentina and France. I can't see either falling down on the job. And I'm rooting for Poland, because, well, Mexico.

There ya go...now if the referee would have been more consistent with his penalty calls...like a missed yellow card....the battle may have taken on a new attack

Thanks for that, Frank. Just wiping a nostalgic tear from my eye. Leeds did have a few decent Scottish players, way back in the day.

Funnily enough, I lived in France for a bit in the 1980s, and I was talking to a French guy (football mad ethnic north african) about the fast approaching decline in Scottish football, when he was amazed to discover that Leeds wasn't a Scottish team.

This tournament is really difficult for me. Ive lived in Wales over half my life but I was born in England and spent my first 15 years there (yorkshire).

Christened in a Welsh church. English father, Welsh mother, Welsh wife and four Welsh kids!

Why did they both have to be in the same group!

Think of it as a win/win?

Take pity on me, my wife's a Brazilian. We've been together since 2011, so this is my third torture sess..oops, World Cup.

I thought I was gonna lose her in '14 when they lost by some hideous score to Germany in the final.

We're in an 800 SF condo for the winter. If it were summer(as it should be) we'd be in a much bigger house in Colorado, and I could spend a month camping by a trout stream. Oh well, thank god for the headphone jack on my amp.

Argentina 1 KSA 2

First game loss to a team outside the top 50.

Well, that quote didn't age well... We'll see if I jinxed things completely in a few hours.

I'm not a futbol fan really, but I do usually enjoy the World Cup, and nice that the US and Belgium are both in it. That said, I just can't get into a tournament in Qatar. Bizarre location spotlighting FIFA corruption. Easy to ignore.

Shame, it's such a great sporting event.
