Arrow Tyler Robbins R.1ca - German Spruce - Koa "Plumeria"

This is a commissioned guitar that Tyler Robbins is building for me that I would like to share with the AGF community.

About 15 months ago, at the enthusiastic recommendation of Tom Sands, Tyler purchased a stunning set of Koa back and sides from Josh and Elaine Johansen at Koa Tonewoods. It was love at first sight when I saw pictures of this wood and after discussing with Tyler, we began planning for this R.1ca model build.

We selected a German Spruce top that rated 10.0 using the Galloup grading system. Tyler uses this system for selecting tops that will consistently produce the desired tone. It measures the wood’s stability and acoustic quality by monitoring data on density, speed of sound, modulus of elasticity and radiation co-efficiency. It works on a scale from 1-10. The higher the rating the better the stiffness to weight ratio and the more efficient the piece will be.

This guitar will have a Florentine cutaway, along with an ebony arm bevel and binding. The ebony fretboard will incorporate Hawaiian Plumeria flowers rendered graphically using white purfling to complement the Hawaiian Koa.

Since the beautiful Koa wood back speaks for itself, it will remain unadorned. Filigree inlay work will appear on the headstock overlay, rosette and end wedge, as well as complementary modern style marquetry on the back of the neck utilizing Koa wood, ebony, and “Golden Smoke” resin.

Specifications for Robbin's model R.1 can be seen here.

Below is a video by Tom Sands. In it he displays and discusses the similarly stunning set of Private Stock Koa Wood he received from Elaine and Josh:

Thanks for having a look. I'll be catching things up with plenty more to come.

Thank you for your comments Rich, Kevin, Martin and bendandsnap and for following along.

Before going further, I want to give a shout out to Tom Dalia, Galloup CNC wizard and an excellent luthier in his own right. He's the one who takes design concepts from Tyler Robbins, Bryan Galloup and Benjamin Kahler and brings those ideas to fruition.

Cheryl and I have a beautiful Hawaiian Plumeria Plant in our garden that flowers 7-8 months out of the year. Tyler ran with our idea idea to incorporate Plumeria flowers into the ebony fretboard. He designed a graphic black and white (purfling) treatment for this concept. Cheryl, who is an accomplished artist, worked with Tyler on the fretboard design layout. Tom (aka FrettieMercury), then tweaked the design just a bit during the CNC programming to accomplish the final design.

Tyler's completed intricate Plumeria Flower fretboard inlay:

Stay tuned for more...

To my eyes that inlay looks perfect on your fret board. Tyler did a great job on it.
Not too big and not too small. Just right.
The Koa is beautiful and will have no problem standing on its own.

Thanks NTS, I couldn't agree more!

Next we'll look at the Rosette from concept to completion:

1) Preliminary Rosette design drawing -

2) Computer design of the filigree rosette -

3) Filigree Options (Ebony and Golden Smoke Resin) -

4) Completed Rosette (Koa, Ebony, Resin) -

And what a story! His designs are so original, yet don't feel forced. I love the personal touch with the plumeria too. I always feel that these details are what makes a custom build extra special.

Thanks Martin, the plumeria fretboard inlay was extra special to Cheryl and me and the filigree rosette also turned out beautifully!

Thanks for your welcome comments Paul, Dennis and Diogo, I will be excited to see this build completed too!

Now we'll have a look at Tyler's use of complementary inlay design elements in the headstock overlay.

1) Preliminary Headstock Overlay design drawing -

2) Computer design of the filigree headstock overlay -

3) Preview of Gold Smoke Resin Filigree on Ebony -

4) Completed Headstock Overlay (Koa, Ebony, Resin Filigree, White Purfling) -

The choice of Gotoh 510 Mini Gold Tuning Machines will tie in nicely with the appearance of the Headstock Overlay. (Either standard Gold, Ebony or Koa Wood buttons - TBD).

Thanks for having a look!

Beautiful design and choices Doug. Both you and Tyler have come a long way since you let me try that Fiddleback Hog you bought from him at Woodstock. Looking forward to seeing how this continues to inspire.
