That's a Strat with the pickup switch set to one of the "in-between" spots that makes two adjacent pickups out of phase with each other. Very different from his earlier Gibson/humbucker sound, but he's able to wring sustain out of either. It's actually easiest to hear how his hands do that on things like the VH1 acoustic "Layla."

Thanks for posting this video. What EC described as "women tone" is the sound I was thinking about when I posed the question. Obviously also a lot of talent on the part of EC to get that sound. BTW, the video reminded me of the scene out of "This is Spinal Tap" where he turns the amp up to eleven.
