Thanks for posting that, Joe. Todd's a great player. I have yet to play a Somogyi. I hope to one day as I've heard amazing things about them.

Back in 1999 I contacted Ervin about building a guitar. I was narrowing my choices down, and was considering Olson and Ryan as well. Somogyi's base price was $6500 then, and he told me "that's either really expensive or really affordable, depending on your perspective."

I ended up ordering a Ryan (base price of $3500 then) but always wonder about that Somogyi. I played one of his modified dreads at Healdsberg in 2003, and the sound still haunts me. The guitar was hot off the bench, and was having a little trouble staying in tune, but wonderful nonetheless. Here's a photo of the maker with Don Alder, who did the demo:
