The first time I bought a guitar and brought it home, I spent the first evening just noodling around figuring out where major and minor scales fell on the fretboard and trying to form a few cowboy chords.
On the second day I decided to learn Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain. Can't remember for sure but it must have been at least a couple weeks of playing it over and over (and over and over and over) a couple hours a day. The first few days were the equivalent of about 2 beats per minute trying to cleanly fret those chords. But at the end of it I could strum the chords (with the walking notes in between) and sing along. One of the happiest days of my musical life!

FYI: For the bass pattern under the E chord, the A to B hammer on goes first and the open E note comes after. It's backwards from what we would consider normal, but that's Willie and that's the way it goes. It then changes to the normal order once the singing starts. Take a listen.
