Default Suggestions For A Strumming Pattern

Hi All,

I'm trying to find a strumming pattern for "The Water is Wide". TIA for any help.

That's really more of a fingerstyle/fingerpicking song.

Here are two different strumming pattern for the song. One all downstrokes on the 6 string, with some picking, and the one on the 12 string is a more standard down...down, up...up, down, up. I'd suggest going for that down...down, up...up, down, up pattern as a start.

I found this really simple version strummed. I think that I would go with just a little less on the strumming than the guy is using in the video. He seems to be using down...down, up, down, up, down, up. I'd take the 3rd "down" out and perhaps make the first "down" simply a hit of the bass note. So bass...down, up...up, down, up. It all depends on how much guitar you want behind your singing.

I may try out the song myself but give it more of a bluegrass/Americana backing with a flatpick. I haven't yet found an example of that on youtube.

After watching a number of open mic players one of the things I've noticed is the lack of a beat in their guitar playing. I'd suggest learning to play in time also.
