From my experience the best affordable plug and play system is the LR baggs Anthem SL. Used I have seen them for as little as $120. And since this is going in a dedicated gig guitar there should be no concern about the braided UST altering the acoustic sound of the guitar.

Jack, I know that you are really particular about you pickups, but in my opinion the problem with the Sonotone is the braided UST. You could try replacing the UST with a solid Fishman Matrix. Russo's Music has one on Reverb for $76.

There is also someone on the Grear Page who posted that they connected a three sensor JJB to the Sonotone pre-amp and he says that it sounds like a miracle.

Hence my use of the word "good" rather than "great"...

Well that would involve soldering, correct? I don't do that myself.
Do you have a link to that Gear Page thread? Thanks pal

I've never seen a Anthem SL for $120.

I don't care about the acoustic sound....all my guitars are used for gigs or plugged in.

Soldering is easy. All it takes is a $30 soldering kit from Amazon, a few Youtube videos, and some practice.

I can't find the Gear Page thread but there is someone right here who connected a K&K to the Sonotone pre-amp. There thread is on the ''build and repair'' page;

I'm going to have to get a Sonotone equipped guitar and try it!

There was one listed for $120 in the classified section just a couple of days ago. It has already been sold. Deals like this come up now and then but they sell quick. look often and move fast when they come up.

I’ve gotten 2 at a great price over the last year.

Purists won't like this one, but I put a Fishman neo d. In a Yamaha FG 820 and have no probs with it. They run 40-50 bucks. I cut the cord and installed a endpin jack to eliminate that cord out the sound hole.
