Anyone one of the many combinations of bassists and drummers that have played with Ahmad Jamal.
Whoever is not soloing at any given time in the DGQ And I'll second the Ron carter and Tony williams, and Dave Holland (or Gary Peacock) and Jack Dejohnette combos.

In the studio world, the rhythm section extends to everyone except the leads. So Booker T. qualifies as well as Steve.
 Duane Allman was a member of the Muscles Shoals rhythm section for a year. Bob

Hey Bob,
I agree.......... and they were greater than the sum of their parts without a doubt, and in general, groove and rhythm were always held in higher regard than soloing. I used to play with a pretty good rhythm section in a band called Topper. The bassist was Doug Stegmeyer and the drummer was Liberty DeVitto. We backed up a guy named Russ Javors. We all eventually recorded and toured with Billy Joel, but some of their best stuff is on reel to reel tapes in my basement......It broke my heart when Doug took his own life back in '95. HE

Any major Big Bands from Woody Herman to Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman had 'Killer' rhythm sections.
All great bands from Rock to Jazz had 'Killer' rhythms. Personally, I always liked Chick Corea's and Tito Puente's bands. Don Ross, all by himself.
