Default I GET THE YAIRI BACK FRIDAY

Some of you may recall my mentioning a few times a Yairi DY90 that I inherited from a wealthy friend and guitar collector. He went to Japan in 1982 and directly commissioned Kazuo Yairi to be instrumental (no pun intended) in its build. This 36 year old guitar was maintained in pristine condition and was my friend's favorite of his many guitars costing up to twenty grand. He wanted me to play Morning Has Broken in fingerstyle on it at his memorial service and then keep it.

The guitar was horribly crushed in a serious accident that was the other driver fault and has resulted in half my spine being fused with titanium rods as well as a few vertebrae in my neck.I'm three weeks away from a year since the surgery and still in constant pain.

I thought the guitar was a total loss until a member of this forum messaged me about a restoration specialist in Missouri (I'm in Texas). I sent him numerous close up pics of the severely split top and crushed sides. He asked me to ship it to him for a proper inspection. I thought it was a hopeless pursuit. To my surprise he said he could bring this guitar with its sound for the gods back to life. Six months later he's sent me a number of pics of it in the final stages of restoration. It's nothing short of amazing what he's accomplished. Next week I intend to make a post with before and after pics that are going to shock most of you who see how it turned out. None of the original wood was replaced. He assured me the sound will be as good as it was before. I'm leaving right after Thanksgiving for the 9 hour drive to bring her back home

Until then, I'm posting this pic of a small interior decor sign I hand painted for his shop wall. It adequately expresses my opinion of this guy!

The sign still has pattern transfer dust and a few reflections but you get the idea!

Great story! The Facebook link didn't work for me, though. Safe travels on your trip to get it back. I've seen a local guy bring back some really badly damaged guitars to full works of beauty so I know it can be done but it's still quite something to see. I'm looking forward to seeing the photos and hearing about how great it sounds.

I sincerely hope your recovery from pain will match the rejuvenation of your guitar. I'm looking forward to the photos of your guitar and thanks for keeping us up to date!

I'm a big Yairi fan, and am looking forward to the rest of the story.

Yairi are great guitars. Awesome story, so sorry for your accident and personal damage.
Most definitely post updates and pics when you have them.

Glad to hear something positive in the midst of all this. I hope this works out amazingly, remembering the original post then seeing this update is remarkable. Best of luck with the guitar and your health.

I’ve been following this since your first post about the accident. Glad to hear it’s nearly finished.

That's a great story, but a horrible one also. I hope the distraction of playing your newly restored guitar may relieve your pain somewhat. Good luck.

Can't wait to see the before and after shots. It amazes me what some people are able to accomplish when it comes to restorative or repair work.

And here's hoping you get to feeling better. Pain sucks the life right outta' ya'!
