a few millimetres of red wine in a glass, plastic-wrap the top, pop a few holes in there...

You'll kill many!

My wife also likes to suck them up w/the vacuum cleaner! Not convinced this kills them, but we do see a decrease, when we use both methods...

There is a different fly, called a filter fly, drain fly or sewer fly, that loves sink drains especially with a disposal. It looks just like a fruit fly (unless your eyesight is really really good). I use some diluted bleach to kill them.

LOL, Todd! That won't address any fruit flies that have taken harbor in a drain though.
