Default finger style problems with finger nail hitting adjacent string

Hi

I am having a problem when playing finger style, the back side of my finger nails on my right hand are slightly hitting the adjacent string, causing a slight buzzing sound. This just started happening recently and I'm not sure what I am doing to cause this.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

John G

Hi

More information might help. How long have you been playing?, how long playing fingerstyle? and what route got you to where you are today?.

Are you self taught, classically trained and are you playing steel strings or nylon?

Cheers.

How long have you been playing?
for a 1.5 yrs

"how long playing fingerstyle"

9 months

what route got you to where you are today?.

self taught, I practice about three hours each day, can read music and tabs,.
Note I play with the flesh of the finger not a nail.

1. Berkley series modem method's for guitar & pumping nylon, about page 20 in second section of modem methods, But approach the text as a finger style
practice this for about a hour each day

2. Play Mark Currey volume 1 and 2 solo pieces for acoustical guitar
again for about a hour. (mostly use tabs)

3. Play various scores that I have found and enjoy (finger style, tabs and score)

Are you self taught
yes

steel or nylon
steel string Breadlove 000/sme

love the tone of a nylon, thinking of getting one, still in the investigation stage

Most likely you are clawing the fingers. Straighten out the knuckles more. Move the hand position a little more upward (away from the floor).

Presuming this happens when you are picking the lower string, I would guess that your nails are not perpendicular to the soundboard. Following rick-slo's suggestion should cure that.

Rick-slo

tried your advice last night and it seem to cure the problem, also noticed that the tone quality seemed better.

thanks again for your help
