What started this was that my son's flight from LA got delayed three hours. Being in the big city I thought that I would go to my favorite funky music store to see what was going on. Not much, but the manager, who I've bought a couple guitars from and is a really nice guy was noodling a banjo he had just gotten in. He was doing a three finger roll, which up until then I didn't know it had a name. I told him I used to do that all the time on my ukulele. So he set me down with the banjo and said go for it. Evidently I can do the two finger roll as well.

Anyway, I'm hooked. I would have bought it right then and there, except I'm leaving this week for a month and I thought I would wait and see if I am still in the mood when I get back. I told my wife that I was thinking of becoming a banjo player and she said, "whatever." I kind of expected to get a bunch of banjo derision out of her, but I think she's waiting until I get one before she starts in on it.
There's one accessory that you will definitely need for a resonator banjo - and get it as quickly as possible - and that's a bluegrass band. It's a bloody useless instrument without one!!!

I've played and studied traditional noter/drone mountain dulcimer for many years. And I used to play dobro in a bluegrass band.

Lol

I went through a big banjo phase. In 1976, when Led Zep was done, i needed a new hero to follow, and that was Earl Scruggs. It was my first exposure to "folk" music. Over the years i played it here and there, but my banjo interest really blossomed when i got mike seeger's "southern banjo styles." Eventually, i became a solo banjo performer, playing every style from minstrelsy to trad jazz; the first time i heard mood indigo/PHJB i had to get into tenor and plectrum...

I havent played banjo in many years -

Ken, this is what I was worried about. I’m sorry for your loss of sanity but I wish you well on your new musical journey.
That said, if you buy an accordion, we will not forget.

Then again, Dave, I've watched the "Big Joe Polka Show" over yonder to the RFD-TV for nigh on to ten years, and accordions are striking a gleam in my eye. Then, just as assuredly, again, for someone who is sold on Sasquatch, me, the sky's the limit on what I might pursue and do! Happy New Year, Dave!

You too! All music in 2024 is music to my ears. [emoji23]
